The School of Language Sciences and the Master in Interlingual and Intercultural Studies organize the Second International Symposium: Interlingual and Intercultural Contacts between April 25 and 27, 2018.
 
The purpose of this symposium is to reflect and share investigative and pedagogical experiences on intercultural communication and interlingual contacts in diverse contexts (contact of prestigious languages ​​with each other, contact of prestigious languages ​​with minority languages ​​such as indigenous, Creole, and sign languages).
We seek to bring together a national and international academic community around issues related to the acquisition and teaching of languages, bilingualism, translation / interpretation, and terminology, the teaching of languages ​​from an intercultural perspective, linguistic policies, and interculturality and citizenship.

Languages ​​of the event: proposals will be accepted in Spanish, English, French, sign language(s) and Portuguese.
 
Themes
 
· Interculturality in teaching and acquisition of languages
In this axis, proposals related to the development and evaluation of intercultural communicative competences, curricular approaches, literature, and interculturality are considered.
 
· Interculturality in translation and terminology
This axis includes the reflections on multiple aspects of contact between languages, among which are the interlingual transfer, the difficulties of translation / interpretation linked to cultural, semiotic and linguistic aspects, among others.
 
· Interculturality and bilingualism
This axis focuses on the issues of linguistic and educational policies, linguistic planning, and the consideration of minority languages ​​and cultures.
 
· Interculturality and citizenship
This axis includes the relationships between education for citizenship and interculturality, intercultural mediation and conflict resolution in contexts of mobility, intranational and international, among others.

  GUEST SPEAKERS

Thomas Kaul

Linguist and pedagogue. His academic work has focused on the study of the processes of social integration of deaf people, which has supported the creation of various public programs of care for this population in Germany. These include university degrees of sign language interpreters and teachers. His team at the University of Cologne, which includes researchers and teachers who are deaf and hearing, has gathered extensive experience in the search for strategies to ensure the participation of both cultures in academic work. He is currently the chair of Education for Deaf People at the University of Cologne.

Alejandro Oviedo

Linguist of sign languages. He has done descriptive works on gestural communication systems of several countries in America, Europe and Africa. Parallel to his work as a linguist he edits the website www.cultura-sorda.org, an international space for reflection on languages, history, cultures and education of sign language users. He is co-founder and current coordinator of the Program for the Training of Interpreters of German Sign Language at the University of Cologne, in Germany.

David Katan

He is a professor of English and translation at the University of Salento (Lecce). His publications are closely linked to translation as intercultural communication and the status of translators and interpreters as cultural mediators.

Thomas Szende

Professor at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations -INALCO- (Paris). Director of the PLIDAM research unit. His research fields include didactics of languages and cultures, applied linguistics and Hungarian linguistics.

Lionel Tovar

Professor at the University of Valle (Cali). He works in acquisition of second languages, bilingualism and bilingual education. He has developed an important work in linguistics of minority languages, especially in bilingualism of the deaf community: linguistic description and linguistic planning of the CSL, teaching of written Spanish as a second language to the deaf, bimodal translation/interpretation, among other related topics.

Manuela Wagner

Associate professor in the program of Literature, Cultures and Languages at the University of Connecticut. She holds an M.A in English studies and Marketing and a Ph.D. in English studies from Graz University, Austria. Her research interests include pragmatic development in first and second language acquisition, the development of intercultural competence and intercultural citizenship in education, communicative development in special circumstances, and humor in education and across cultures. She recently co-edited the books Teaching Intercultural Competence across the Age Range: from Theory to Practice (2017) and  From Principles to Practice in Education for Intercultural Citizenship (2016).

Stella Cambrone-Lasnes

Professor at the University of Franche-Comté (France). His academic and research interests include methodology of research in languages and cultures, didactics of plurilinguism and pluriculturalism, teacher training, representations and ideologies about languages, linguistic and educational policies.
